<$title$> Dear [fullname,fallback=Coach],
The levels of leadership are about learning to lead ourselves. Through the growth we experience we become more certain of ourselves, which gives us the confidence and the competence to make more decisions, which means people will entrust us with their loyalty.
Levels to leadership start with self and then progress to others, yet it’s how we lead that determines so much of our results. Are we a dictator or do we inspire? Do we demand or command loyalty? Do we put our energy into serving our team or expect them to serve us?
Leadership is the focal point of so many organisations we are working with, because team members no longer accept nor need to stay with a leader who does anything less than empower them.
And most importantly, leadership is really about responsibility. As you become a more proficient leader you must take on the responsibility that comes with this. It’s the ultimate journey, with the greatest challenges and the most rewards.
Warmest regards,

Sharon Pearson

Essential Coaching for Leaders – back due to popular demand
We have been quietly letting the word spread that Essential Coaching Skills for Leaders is back! This means that five places are already booked (it’s amazing what happens when the word gets out) and that ten places remain.
This training receives awesome feedback. It provides a complete coaching model for leaders to use when performance managing their teams. I used to run something like this years ago for Flight Centre and a couple of other companies but I had never run it as one two-day program until last year. So whilst I had taught elements of it hundreds of times, now it’s all in one training for our participants.
It includes the TACOCA Model of Coaching Teams, which is a full performance management coaching model for leaders. Used by coaches when coaching executives and by executives themselves, it’s the solution to ongoing accountability and performance management.
Call us on 1800 094 927 or email us.
Participants at The Coaching Institute are able to attend these trainings with Sharon Pearson and Joe Pane at reduced rates.
This program once accredited will enable participants to move towards accreditation with the Certificate IV in Executive and Workplace Coaching.

The Ladder of Leadership
By Sharon Pearson
I believe there is always more to learn about ourselves and the best way to do this is to place ourselves into positions of leadership and responsibility. How we react when everything is calm and no one relies on us is a poor measure compared to how we respond when there is pressure, people counting on us and a need to perform.
Since I began my coaching practice six years ago I have learned just how great I was at leading myself and just how much I had to learn about leading others. It’s been a journey of ups and downs, with mainly downs in the first two years.
My original style (I use this word very loosely) was to hope they liked me, hoped they would stay and hoped it all worked out. This didn’t work, and I know you’re surprised to hear this!
My “new” style was to tell everyone, get easily disappointed, give up and get frustrated. That didn’t work either. Imagine the shock.
The pendulum continued to swing as time went along. Because the business was growing I had to get better at whatever this thing called leadership was, and I had to do it fast. And this is the kicker, I don’t think it can be done fast.
I think to become an effective leader we need the time to find what works, to learn from our mistakes and to grow as a result of what we discover. The journey is more one of self-awareness than anything else.
There are stages we need to go through on the journey to leadership competence. It starts with frustration and eventually you get to excitement when you see you might be getting the hang of it. Then there’s everything in between.
And ultimately, we get the team we deserve based on who we are being as a leader. I didn’t like hearing this the first time. Or the second.
The good news is, now I love this, because I love this team. To get there, there are stages that must be mastered, and can’t be skipped.
We need to move from the bully who rules through title and authority to one who leads through relationships. This has it’s own problems, because for a while we have friendships with poor results.
From here we move to relationships based on respect, where your productivity inspires and demands efforts on the part of your team. This is great progress and where every leader must strive to be.
Finally, with time and learning, we are an inspired leader where people are loyal, dedicated and successful because your efforts are for their success, rather than your own.
The ladder of leadership success has its bumps and its challenges, and this needs to be okay. Because if you get it, you know you have mastered your own ability to manage and lead yourself in an uncertain, constantly changing, demanding world.
Coaching Corner
By Lisa Wiking
Leadership and coaching are such a powerful and potent combination. Coaching provides the opportunity for us to reflect on our qualities of leadership, make decisions on what we can change and teaches us to focus on how to improve.
As a leader in a business it is easy to have the opinion that ‘I have made it, I am here and I have succeeded, and all the people below me, still have a long way to go to ‘succeed’. Yet, the truth is, that, it’s not that we have made it, rather that this is only just the beginning of the journey. There is no better magnifying glass than that of the team around us. In coaching we understand that you cannot perceive anything out side of us that is not with in us. This means that the team that we have is a direct reflection of what is going on within us. If there is a challenge with the team, if they seem to have faults or weaknesses, as a leader it is easy to put the blame or criticism on them as ‘incompetent’ or unable to perform tasks. When the truth is, this is a clue for us to take a look at ourselves, what is it within us that needs to change, or what do we need to learn to enable us to see the team can be committed to results and determined to get the desired outcomes. This is the journey of coaching. There is no final destination, there is no arrival point, only constant and never ending improvement and commitment to learning more about ourselves to improve. It is this attitude that means you, as a leader, will be able to lead a team to results and outcomes that you could have only dreamed of. As anything that you can think about you can bring about, it’s simply your willingness to learn and grow that stands in the way.
